Demonstrations Alert – U.S. Embassy Montevideo, Uruguay

Location: Announced gathering points include, but are not limited to, the following locations in Montevideo, Uruguay:

  • (December 20, 2023) Universidad de la República to Plaza Libertad
  • (December 20, 2023) Plaza Libertad to Plaza Independencia
  • (December 21, 2023) U.S. Embassy

Event: There are two concurrent demonstrations/marches in downtown Montevideo, scheduled for Wednesday, December 20 at 6:30 PM. One march is in support of Palestine and will move from the Universidad de la República to Plaza Libertad. The other march is in support of Israel and will move from Plaza Libertad to Plaza Independencia. The marches are expected to block traffic on 18 de Julio Avenue. U.S. government personnel and U.S. citizens are advised to avoid the area of the demonstrations between 4 and 9 PM.

On Thursday, December 21 a pro-Palestinian protest is scheduled to take place at the U.S. Embassy at 6:30 PM. U.S. government personnel and U.S. citizens are advised to avoid the area of the demonstrations immediately before and after the event.

  • Avoid the area where the demonstration is taking place.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Keep a low profile.
