Press Release: Ambassador Haley on the Timeline for Venezuelan Presidential Elections
In 2017, the Maduro regime held fraudulent gubernatorial and mayoral elections and unconstitutionally revoked the legitimate governing power of the freely elected National Assembly. Now, the illegitimate Constituent Assembly has called for presidential elections by the end of April, which would neither be free nor fair.
“By calling for snap presidential elections, the dictator Maduro and his sham Constituent Assembly are showing the world that they never had any intention of allowing the people of Venezuela to have their voices heard. Maduro continues to disregard the welfare of the Venezuelan people and rob them of their democracy. We echo the Lima Group’s rejection of the early vote and call for a free, fair, and transparent process that restores constitutional democracy in Venezuela. The United States will not stand idle as the people of Venezuela continue to be victimized by the Maduro regime,” said Ambassador Haley.
