Broadway Review – Cultural Diplomacy with Company-E

The Embassy of the United States in Montevideo facilitated the arrival of the American theater company, Company E to carry out a cultural diplomacy program in Montevideo. It consisted of a seven-day workshop with young artists from Uruguay that led to a production which was presented at the Sala Nelly Goitiño of the Sodre Theater on May 23-24, 2015.

During the workshops and rehearsals, uruguayan musicians, dancers, and actors which were selected via a casting call, worked arduously with the American trainers, artists and members of Company E to prepare for the main event.

On Saturday, May 23, the first day of the presentations, the group of artists performed the great Broadway titles like “Over the Rainbow”, “Season of Love”, “All the Jazz”, “Send in the Clowns”, “Somewhere Duet”, “Summertime”, “Cool”, “Sound of Music”, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious / Steppin Time”, “Falling” y “One”.

The U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, Bradley Freden, assisted Saturday’s presentation and had the opportunity to visit and greet the ensemble and members of Company E at the end of the show.

Company E is based in Washington D.C. It is a theater company with a repertoire of contemporary dance, which is also dedicated to teaching dance and interdisciplinary arts, with an emphasis on international collaboration between great choreographers, dancers, and artists.

The company looks to create and perform pieces that educate in a way that is environmentally sustainable. The company is composed of nine dancers that work under the artistic direction of Paul Gordon Emerson and of Kathryn Sidell Pilkington.
