Message to U.S. Citizens: Security Alert

Event:  The U.S. Embassy in Montevideo advises U.S. citizens of recent crime incidents against foreign nationals that occurred on Friday, August 17, 2018, and Saturday, August 18, 2018, in the Montevideo neighborhoods of Pocitos and Malvín.  In one incident, the victim was physically assaulted and robbed while exiting from a taxi.  In a second incident, armed robbers stole valuables from the victims as they were exiting their vehicle.

Actions to Take:
  • Maintain situational awareness and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive jewelry or watches and keep the amount of valuables on your person to a minimum.
  • Do not physically resist if confronted by an armed or unarmed robber as robbers may resort to violence.
  • Use caution when walking or driving at night.
